Work experience is essential for getting a job. The AFS Volunteer Programme is aimed at young adults who want to gain real-life experience and intercultural knowledge.

This 12-month programme provides you with an opportunity for creating positive social change through volunteering, while improving your personal, educational, and professional skills. Non-formal and formal learning opportunities during the programme enable you to acquire essential competencies to become an Active Global Citizen, thereby improving your employment prospects and facilitating your transition into the labor market.

The various projects within the programme are looking for young, highly motivated team members to play an active part in their organisation and to contribute to the daily work routine of the organisation.

Project Description: Youth Welfare Organization

Within the Young Workers Volunteer Program, AFS Germany offers the possibility to work within a great team supporting youth in their everyday lives. The project is an institution of youth welfare for children and teens who are no longer able to live with their family or who were expelled from school due to a high number of absences, an opportunity to attend school.

The project is located in a small village close to the city of Giessen and Marburg in Hessen, in the middle of Germany. You will support children and teens who dropped out of school, have problems in school, or who have ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in a flexible but structured environment. The project also takes in underage unaccompanied refugees until they are of age for the project. You will living at the project to experience full immersion. Your input is welcome- you can introduce new extra curricular activities and offer workshops for students in accordance with your own interests and skills. The working language is German and it is a 12-month programme.

Internship details

In the first half of the year you will gain experience by assisting the team. In the second half you will take on more responsibility. Tasks might include:
• Motivate young people
• Organize shuttle service for external appointments
• Support in the kitchen
• Support within the residential group
• Household organization and domestic tasks
• Take part in the holiday trip
• You are encourage to introduce extra curricular activities for pupils in accordance to your own interests and hobbies

Educational requirements

The project prefers university students or participants who already have work experience through internships or former employment. Prior experience will strengthen your application. You should be able to operate household appliances, do domestic tasks and have a drivers license. You should be ready to work in various fields of activities, take on different supporting tasks, as well as introduce your own ideas. You should be outgoing, open minded, highly motivated and flexible.

Language details

It is a requirement to speak German at least at level B1-2 (or higher). Working language at the project is German. Working language during AFS seminars is both German and English. You must be able to understand given instructions at the project and handle daily life situations solely (!) in German.

Housing / meals details

The project will provide accommodation in a single-room in an apartment with other volunteers and co-workers (up to 20 people) on the project site. Bathroom, kitchen and living room are shared with others. You will participate in fulfilling the mutual household chores and you will take turns cleaning. Food will not be provided.

Social life

The project is located close to the cities of Gießen (+ 86.000 inhabitants) und Marburg (+ 76.226 inhabitants) in Hessen, Germany. The city is well connected to local and national public transport. The region has a lot to offer in terms of cultural and social activities.

During Christmas and Easter, you are invited to stay with a German host family. On New Year’s Eve, you will be invited to celebrate with German AFSers.

You will be paired with a German AFSer in a so-called "peer contact". AFS peers belong to the same age group and support each other throughout the program. Most German AFS peers have been abroad as AFS participants themselves. This peer networking approach is meant to encourage interaction between current and former AFS participants and to kick-start your social life in Germany.
