This 12-months program provides you with an easily accessible opportunity for effecting positive societal change through volunteering, while improving your skills and competences for personal, educational, and professional development. Non-formal and formal learning opportunities during the program will enable you to acquire essential competences for personal growth in order to become an Active Global Citizen, thereby improving your employment prospects and facilitating your transition into the labor market.

Project Description: Youth Hostel Outside a Castle Gate

Within the Young Workers Volunteer Program, AFS Germany offers the possibility to work in one of the biggest institutions of youth hostelling in Germany. The project is located in Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany. As a Young Worker you will work in a youth hostel that offers affordable and safe accommodation for individual travellers and travelling groups. A home away from home. The hostel is part of the German Youth Hostel Association, a non-profit association, founded in 1909. The hostels are open to anyone looking for an alternative to hotels – families, backpackers, business travellers, travelling school and youth groups, etc. There are over 500 youth hostels in Germany, making it the largest member of the international youth association Hostelling International. Besides the dormitories, the hostel is prepared to receive large groups and offers a big seminar and meeting room and spaces for recreation activities.

The Project, that is looking for a young, highly motivated team member, is located in a beautiful city (217.198 inhabitants) in Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany. The project is beautifully situated directly at one of the mayor ports of Germany. The City has a unique architechture and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Internship details

Tasks might include:
• Assistance in reception and guest care: Check in, check out, answer questions, look after guests, give out keys, answer the phone
• You will be working shifts
• Organizing events and event management: preparing rooms, putting chairs, printing programs, catering
• Room keeping: changing bed linens, bathroom cleaning, laundry cleaning, mopping the floor
• Assistance in maintenance of the house

Educational requirements

The project prefers university students or participants who already have work experience through internships or former employment. A focus and particular interest in tourism, hotel business and hospitality is advantageous. Prior experience will strengthen your application. You should be motivated to work in various fields of activities, work independently and posses organizing ability, be creative, introduce your own ideas and be open to the existing program. You should as well have good craftsmanship skills.

It is a requirement to speak German and English at least at level A2 (higher levels are preferred). If your German exceeds level B2, English is not a requirement. Working language at the project and during AFS seminars is both German and English. You must be able to understand given instructions at the project and handle daily life situations solely (!) in German.

Social life

The project is located in the city of Lübeck (218,523 inhabitants) in Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany. The city is well connected to local and national public transport, particularly with the city of Hamburg. It is a beautiful City listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. There are three universities in the city and the social impact of students is noticeable. The city has a lot to offer in terms of cultural and social activities.

During Christmas and Easter, you are invited to stay with a German host family. On New Year’s Eve, you will be invited to celebrate with German AFSers.

You will be paired with a German AFSer in a so-called "peer contact". AFS peers belong to the same age group and support each other throughout the program. Most German AFS peers have been abroad as AFS participants themselves. This peer networking approach is meant to encourage interaction between current and former AFS participants and to kick-start your social life in Germany.
