Work experience is essential for getting a job. The Young Workers Volunteer Program is aimed at young adults who want to clarify career goals and gain intercultural knowledge.

This 12-months program provides you with an easily accessible opportunity for effecting positive societal change through volunteering, while improving your skills and competences for personal, educational, and professional development. Non-formal and formal learning opportunities during the program will enable you to acquire essential competences for personal growth in order to become an Active Global Citizen, thereby improving your employment prospects and facilitating your transition into the labor market.

The project is looking for a young, highly motivated team member to play an active part in their organization and to contribute to the daily work routine of the project.

Project Description: Protection Station at the North Sea

Within the Young Workers Volunteer Program, AFS Germany offers the possibility to work at a station that protects the wildlife of the sea and its environment in Germany. The project is located in Sylt in Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany. As a Young Worker you will be working in a project committed to protecting the Wadden Sea to preserve it for future generations despite climate change, rising sea levels and intensive use. You will experience a wide range of nature experience events all year round: Wadden Sea walks, bird tours, beach and dune excursions or sea animal fishing trips. The protection station also participates in various scientific observation programs: Censuses of resting and breeding birds, tidal flat bottom animals, monitoring of marine mammals and observations of beach pollution

Internship details

In the first half of the year you will gain experience by assisting the team. In the second half you will take on more responsibility. Tasks might include:
• Guiding groups through the mudflats
• Accompany beach walks & naturalistic sea animal fishing trips
• Give slide shows for young and old
• Being in charge of the exhibition "Arche Wattenmeer"
• Support our biologists witauxiliary scientific work
• As a National Park administrator you will have your "own" area of responsibility

The project prefers university students or participants who already have work experience through internships or former employment. Prior experience will strengthen your application. You should have environmental awareness/interest in nature conservation and educational work, be motivated to work in various fields of activities, want to work in a large, young team (up to 6-18 pers.). You schould like to be outside.

Language details

It is a requirement to speak German at least at level B1-2 (or higher). Working language at the project is German. Working language during AFS seminars is both German and English. You must be able to understand given instructions at the project and handle daily life situations solely (!) in German.

Housing / meals details

You will stay within the organization where a room will be provided for you in a shared apartment wih other volunteers. The project seeks to accommodate you in a single room. Still there are some apartments where volunteers share the room with another volunteer. You receive a respective amount of money for food. Usually the volunteers daily cook and eat together. Every week the volunteers do their grocery shopping together. Often the meals are vegetarian.

Social life

The project is located in the Island of Sylt (15.169 inhabitants) in Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany. The city is well connected to local and national public transport. Is the Germans' favorite holiday Island and is known for its long beaches, holiday resorts and the mudflats of the Wadden Sea on the eastern side. The city has a lot to offer in terms of cultural and social activities.

During Christmas and Easter, you are invited to stay with a German host family. On New Year’s Eve, you will be invited to celebrate with German AFSers.

You will be paired with a German AFSer in a so-called "peer contact". AFS peers belong to the same age group and support each other throughout the program. Most German AFS peers have been abroad as AFS participants themselves. This peer networking approach is meant to encourage interaction between current and former AFS participants and to kick-start your social life in Germany.
