Children's Education in Costa Rica

The future of Costa Rica is shaped in the classrooms and schools of the country, where kids from different walks of life gather to learn and have fun. Although Costa Rica has a priority of promoting education, the contributions and support of international volunteers are always welcomed and needed.

You will work with public schools and non-profit educational organizations (pre-school and elementary school levels), supporting educational and recreational activities, while sharing and learning with local kids. As these are community based organizations, you will also have the opportunity to integrate in the community, live with a local family, and improve your Spanish language skills.

Language details

Minimum required: must be able to follow instructions and express basic needs in Spanish language. Intermediate to advanced command of Spanish language is preferred.
Soft skills and other requirements

Necessary skills include patience and positive attitude in working with children. Prior volunteer work and studies in education a plus.

Host families in this program do not receive a payment. They host as volunteers because they want to learn from another culture, share their own culture and make new international friends. Host families will share what they have: their home, their meals, and their love. They expect the international volunteers to integrate and participate in their daily life as another member of the family, including respect their family rules and their culture. Host families will share their normal meals with the international volunteer, but if their daily diet is not in accordance with the volunteer’s diet expectations or tastes, it will be responsibility of the international volunteer to procure his/her own meals or preferred foods (at his/her own cost).

Costa Rica is small country famous for the friendliness of its people. With intensely diverse geography in a very small territory, Costa Rica offers a combination of small cities, rural towns, amazing beaches, beautiful mountains and lush forests accessible for most visitors and locals. Daily social life is favored by the welcoming local people and the host families. Activities vary from city to city and from town to town, but on the free days, it is easy to find different things to do.
