Work experience is essential for getting a job. The Young Workers Volunteer Programme is aimed at young adults who want to clarify career goals and gain intercultural knowledge.

This 12-month programme provides you with an easily accessible opportunity for effecting positive societal change through volunteering, while improving your skills and competences for personal, educational, and professional development. Non-formal and formal learning opportunities during the program will enable you to acquire essential competences for personal growth in order to become an Active Global Citizen, thereby improving your employment prospects and facilitating your transition into the labor market.

The various projects in this program are looking for young, highly motivated team members to play an active part in their organisation and to contribute to the daily work routine of the organisation. The following project is one of the projects participating in the program.

Project Description: Training and Conference Center in Berlin

Within the Young Workers Volunteer Programme, AFS Germany offers the possibility to work in an adult education training and conference Center in Germany’s capital. The project is located in Berlin, Eastern Germany. As a Young Worker you will work in a non-partisan, independent non-profit institution of civil society, that since its foundation in 1963 contributes to international understanding and educational work on issues of European integration.
The project plans, organizes and implements a large number of events and initiatives. For this purpose, it operates a conference hotel with 32 guest rooms and modern conference rooms. Target groups include diplomats, journalists and multipliers from all areas of social life, public service employees, students and pupils as well as the interested public. Sometimes it is also available for guest conferences and private guests.

Internship details

In the first half of the year you will gain experience by assisting the team. In the second half you will take on more responsibility. Tasks might include:
• Assistance in the office area
• Reception service (check in check out, e-mail correspondence, telephone service, etc.)
• Support in the hotel
• Support of the janitor/technician in the preparation and follow-up of events, media technical support as well as support in the house (small repairs) and in the outside area (e.g. garden).

Educational requirements

The project prefers university students or participants who already have work experience through internships or former employment. Prior experience will strengthen your application. You should be motivated to work in various fields of activities, take on different supporting tasks, as well as introduce your own ideas. You should be punctual, friendly, polite and able to work under pressure. Background in the hotel/gastronomy Business and knowledge of MS-Office is desired.

It is a requirement to speak German and English at least at level A2 (higher levels are preferred). If your German exceeds level B2, English is not a requirement. Working language at the project and during AFS seminars is both German and English. You must be able to understand given instructions at the project and handle daily life situations solely (!) in German.

Social life

The project is located in the city of Berlin (3.613.495 inhabitants) capital and largest city of Germany. The city is well connected to local and national public transport. There are many universities in the city and the social impact of students is clearly noticeable. The city has a lot to offer in terms of cultural and social activities.

During Christmas and Easter, you are invited to stay with a German host family. On New Year’s Eve, you will be invited to celebrate with German AFSers.

You will be paired with a German AFSer in a so-called "peer contact". AFS peers belong to the same age group and support each other throughout the program. Most German AFS peers have been abroad as AFS participants themselves. This peer networking approach is meant to encourage interaction between current and former AFS participants and to kick-start your social life in Germany.
